Submissions

Thank you for your interest in publishing your work in Simply Haiku. We publish all forms of Japanese short form poetry, as well as all forms of traditional and modern haiga. In addition we publish essays, articles and reviews relating to haiku poetry and associated genres. Please read the introduction to each section for more detailed information.

Response Time: We strive to acknowledge submissions quickly and to respond with a decision of whether to accept for publication within four to six weeks. If you have not received a response within this window, please send a note of inquiry to the editor to whom you submitted your work.

Payment: There is currently no payment for accepted submissions beyond publication.

Policy on Publication Elsewhere: Simply Haiku does not consider submissions of previously published works unless invited; however, we do not consider postings on Internet forums, personal webpages and the like as publications. Simultaneous submissions are no longer acceptable. However, our policies do allow other journals to republish/reprint your work if you and they wish to do so. In such cases, Simply Haiku must be listed as the place of first publication.

How to Submit Poetry: All poems must be submitted by email to the editor of the appropriate section: Haiku (10-25); Tanka (5-20); Senryu (any number); Haibun (1-3). Work may be submitted in any language, so long as it is accompanied by an English language translation. Any quoted work must be attributed both to the original author and to the translator(s), if any.

How to Submit Artwork: Simply Haiku has a continuous open submissions period for haiga. Submissions will be scheduled by the haiga editor to meet quarterly deadlines. Previously published work is by invitation only. You may submit up to a dozen works at one time. You may submit up to a dozen works at one time and no less than five. We may publish between 4 and 8 haiga for each presentation. Please be mindful of the season (a snow scene will not be chosen for a summer issue). We are interested in combined art and prose of high quality. Judgments will be made at the sole discretion of the editor. All haiku-related art forms (e.g., ink drawing, brush painting, woodblock painting, photo, digital) will be considered.

Artwork must be your own unless it is a collaboration in which case your partner(s) must also be named and must also give his/her/their permission to publish in Simply Haiku.

Send your artwork submission as an attachment; zip files are fine. We no longer accept images that are embedded in the body of the email. Images should be in JPEG/JPG format. Your JPEG/JPG label MUST include your name and title of each image. Please include your signature on the artwork itself. Subject line of your email should read "Simply Haiku Submission, genre".

Dimensions of images should be: maximum width=750 pixels (10.417") or less, maximum height=750 pixels or less, ppi=72, and the larger dimension should be at least 600 pixels (8.333"). Please keep these proportions in mind when preparing your artwork submission. The poetry within graphics must be readable and legible at these sizes. We may resize them as necessary to create an appealing visual display.

Contractual Agreement: Simply Haiku receives first serial rights to the works it publishes. Reprint rights revert to the author 30 days after the first day of publication in Simply Haiku. This means that the author of a work is then free to have it republished elsewhere, as long as:
~ those other publishers do not require first rights, and
~ those publishers credit the work's first publication in Simply Haiku.

1. Read the Editor's Introduction to the genre/section of Simply Haiku to which your submission pertains [e.g., if you are submitting haiku, read the Haiku Editor's Introduction, found in the Contents listing of the current issue]. This will let you know what the Editor has in mind with respect to his/her section.

2. Address your email to the correct editor [editors are listed below]. [We do not accept submissions by regular mail].

3. Create a Subject Line that reads "Simply Haiku Submission, genre" but specify the genre (see list below) in your subject line [e.g., Simply Haiku Submission - haibun].

4a. Poetry and Prose: Features should be sent in attachments, in .doc, .rtf, or .pdf files. Poetry and haibun may be sent in an attachment in a .doc, .rtf, or .pdf file. But please copy and paste them into the body of the email as well, since we sometimes have problems opening the files with differences in software between computers.

4b. Attach Artwork: If your submission is artwork, ATTACH your artwork to the email message [see artwork guidelines, above].

5. Add Your Biography and Photo: Please include a biography and a photo. You may embed the photo directly into the body of the email, or as an attachment (a regular print photo may be scanned into a JPEG). Please be sure to label your JPEG with your name. The Biography need not be elaborate. If you're unclear about what to include, have a look at some of the biographies in the current issue of Simply Haiku.

6. Read carefully the permission statement (below). It will appear automatically in the body of the email when you click on one of the following email links. If you send your work in an attachment, copy and paste it into the body of this email with the Submission statement.

Permission Statement: The work I am submitting is my own original work which has not been published, electronically or in print, and that it is neither under consideration nor has it been accepted for publication elsewhere. I understand and agree that Simply Haiku acquires first serial rights for works submitted and I offer Simply Haiku first serial rights on the work I am submitting; I agree that if Simply Haiku accepts my work for publication, first publication acknowledgement to Simply Haiku will appear with the work in any subsequent publications. I understand and agree that works published in Simply Haiku shall not be published elsewhere before or within a period of 30 days from their Simply Haiku release date. I give Simply Haiku the right to publish and archive accepted work.
