SNOW SHOWER

morning sun
frost steams
from garden fences
Andrew
a snow shower from a roof
scatters a line of smokers
Dick
two schoolgirls
chat on a memorial bench
playing the wag
Hanne
the old blind ewe
nuzzles new twins
Melissa
daffodils in snow
cat and a freezing bird
look at each other
Sys
my sister's dog barks loudly
because of my fancy hat

* * * * * *
Hanne
after her death
their mother's wardrobe
yields up secrets
Melissa
stopped at the border
a lorry full of refugees
Andrew
slip of a tongue
at the counter: the spokesman
orders in Romanian
Dick
a scorching afternoon:
coffee - and the scent of roses
Sys
she loves to touch
the boy's hair, so light
from the summer sun
Hanne
unnecessary, of course,
his guiding hand on the stairs
Dick
getting dressed
my new cream shirt
looks better on her
Andrew
his father's face
appears in the shaving mirror
Melissa
a dark lake
ducks make wrinkles on
the lengthened moon
Sys
the pedalos are covered
with a blue tarpaulin
Andrew
moorgrime descends
the season's last visitors
chat and feel brave
Dick
all along the beach
I crackle empty cockleshells

* * * * * *
Sys
from his son's bedroom
the sound of a sax
greets the postman home
Melissa
a phone call from Japan
telling about a concert
Hanne
a little pink mobile
busy fingers send
unceasing texts
Sys
breaking news: the blizzard
is seen all over the world
Dick
the pregnant lawyer
is expecting her husband
back for the birth
Hanne
celebrating a victory
and their first kiss
Melissa
the Prince returns
to the nation's acclaim
and most of his girlfriends
Dick
she walks in her garden
picking golden dahlias
Sys
swishing wipers scrape
a leaf across
the car windscreen
Andrew
still biking to work
cold fingers on the handlebars
Hanne
in the moonlight
tomorrow's guy
looks stoic
Melissa
the boutique displays
posters of Che Guevara

* * * * * *
Andrew
shoes too tight
the tired shop assistant
looks at her watch
Sys
an empty carriage
on every seat a booking slip
Dick
one by one
the faithful put coins
in the collection plate
Dick
the chickens are hatched
long before Easter
Hanne
nursing a hot drink
she checks the blossom
in nightie and wellies
Melissa
a pot of hyacinths
for our lunchtime hosts
Andrew

A kasen plan was used, though it changed in a few places as we went on. Each verse was assigned to a writer, who made one or more offers for it. The verse was then chosen by whoever was to write the next one. Disagreements were theoretically settled by discussion, but we had severe e-mail communication difficulties at times which limited this. I (Dick Pettit) was convenor and general factotum.
