Haiku by Sawako Nakano

before the sun gets high
another pail of water
for the hydrangea

between the thunder
birds glide
above the muddy stream

rain-washed yard
a frog holding
on the edge of a pot

funeral in the late summer
a black butterfly around
pink oleanders

feeble sound
from the bush
crickets in the dark

Sawako Nakano was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She studied English literature in college; worked at a construction company, and a trading company; and lived in Ithaca, New York, for two years.
