Daruma Shikishiban by Furukawa Taiko

Scroll calligraphy:
"Cold clouds envelop the setting sun" dated 1958/
signed The 88-year-old fellow Taiko.

In Zen, Buddha-nature—as described in the insciption—and human nature—epitomized by Daruma—are considered to be a single entity. Taiko served many years as head of the Myoshin-ji Branch of Rinzai Zen. He was a prolific Zen artist, and would often brush Daruma paintings on the spot as a kind of autograph. This may well be an example of one of Taiko's spontaneous
Daruma paintings.
