Mark Smith grew up in Wantage, a small town near Oxford, UK. He received a Foundation Diploma from Falmouth College of Art, and a BA (honors) degree in Illustration from Hereford college of Art & Design. Much of the inspiration for his art comes from literature and music, as well as from landscape and nature—an interest which led to his being inspired by the haiku of Basho. Currently he is attempting to set himself up as a freelance Illustrator/painter, and he hopes to produce even more work inspired by Basho's poems.
The Bashō haiku under each image is translated by Jane Reichhold from her book, The Complete Bashō.
