sneakers' knotted
laces hang from phone wires
the wind moans |

summer evening—
baby at the bar licks lime slice
and puckers |

|
I scratch smudge
from my forearm—
mosquito |
|

|
| |
awning rustles
above our heads...
a sparrow soars |
|
|
rain flecks signs
on election day—
we watch the storm |

Tara Betts teaches creative writing at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
