Tale of Genji, Chapter 32

by Utagawa Kunisada II

Date: c 1857
14 x 10 inches
Woodblock Print

From a series based on the Tale of Genji, a beautifully detailed print with bokashi shading. The Genji mon assigned to different chapters of the Tale relates to the Kodo Incense Game where participants try to guess the combination of fragrances being used. Note in this interesting print with a Genji mon (which actually should be for Chapter 36) there is a central incense burner. Interesting metallic flakes adorn border.
