The Maiden of Dojoji

 by Utagawa, Kuniyoshi

Date: c 1849-53
Triptych 14 1/2 x 33 inches
Woodblock print.

A beautiful image with cherry blossom background based on a very dramatic legend of Kiyohime and Anchin. Kiyohime falls in love with a young priest named Anchin but he resists her charms and hides under the bell of Dojoji temple; she, however, is so enraged that she turns into a demonic serpent whose fiery breath burns the bell and Anchin.
